Ciaran Furlong’s entrepreneurial journey began in the hands-on world of retail, owning and operating three golf shops in Ireland. This experience, while ultimately challenged by economic shifts after 2008, provided invaluable insights into the dynamics between retailers and their suppliers. Ciaran keenly observed the need for more supportive partnerships, a stark contrast to some of the challenges he faced as a store owner.

Stepping into the Agency World and Discovering New Horizons

In 2013, following the closure of his retail business, Ciaran transitioned into the agency side of the fashion industry, working alongside his uncle. This period exposed him to the fast-paced world of brands, seasonal collections, and the energy of international trade shows. He witnessed the innovation and unique identities that defined successful fashion houses.

A significant opportunity arose with Gilt Edge (Grogan Brothers), a long-established (since 1968) Irish wholesaler of accessories and clothing. Ciaran joined them as a sales representative, navigating new territories and building relationships with independent menswear retailers across Ireland. This role honed his understanding of the diverse needs and personalities within the retail sector and further solidified his belief in the importance of strong personal connections.

Navigating the Pandemic and Seeds of a New Venture

The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 brought unprecedented disruption. As an agent primarily focused on occasion wear through Gilt Edge (Grogan Brothers), Ciaran faced a drastically altered market. However, this period of stillness inadvertently created space for a new venture to take root.

A connection with Ishprit Singh, a suit manufacturer in India, offered a potential path forward. Initial samples showed promise, hinting at an opportunity to provide quality formal wear at a time when prices were rising.

The Birth of Ciaran James Agencies and a Commitment to Partnership

As pandemic restrictions eased, the opportunity with the Indian manufacturer gained momentum. A pivotal meeting in person solidified a shared vision and a commitment to quality. Recognizing a gap in the market for well-made suits at pre-inflationary prices, Ciaran James Agencies was born.

The agency’s foundational brand, HouseOfU, emerged from this partnership. The aim was to offer an entry-level price point suit without compromising on quality, directly addressing the frustrations of retailers and consumers facing rising costs.

The early days were marked by logistical hurdles, overcome with the crucial support of partners like Pronto Distribution. The first retailer to embrace HouseOfU was Doerty for Men, whose feedback proved invaluable in refining the product.

A core principle of Ciaran James Agencies was established: to operate as a supportive partner to retailers, driving business through their stores rather than competing against them. This philosophy shaped the agency’s distribution strategy, focusing on building strong relationships with a select number of retailers in each area.

Expanding the Portfolio with Premium Brands and Shared Values

Building on the initial success of HouseOfU, Ciaran James Agencies strategically expanded its portfolio to cater to a broader spectrum of the menswear market.

A partnership was forged with Cavaliere Sweden, a premium tailoring brand with a rich family history and a commitment to high-quality, handcrafted garments. This addition allowed the agency to offer a more exclusive, bespoke option, appealing to a different segment of consumers while aligning with Ciaran’s appreciation for brands with a strong personal identity.

Furthermore, the agency represents Gilt Edge (Grogan Brothers) accessories, providing retailers with versatile styling pieces to enhance their offerings.

Within a remarkably short period, Ciaran James Agencies has grown to serve over 60 active accounts, a testament to its commitment to quality, fair pricing, and genuine retailer support.
